Black people always speak about
Why we shouldn't celebrate the 
4th of July

We were not free
We were slaves
We couldn't vote
We didn't have schools
It's not our
Independence Day

I personally 
have an issue with 
Using history as an excuse 
Not to do something 
A lot of the time
The enlightened community 
Teaches us our history 
And there is nothing wrong with that.

The problem is when 
People take our history & twist it 
Using it as a reason 
Not to progress
Not to understand
Not to learn 
Not to grow
Not to teach

To tell me 
I shouldn't celebrate 
For what my people 
Fought and died for
Which enables use to 
Progress
Understand 
Learn 
grow
Teach 
Is a slap in the face to 
The memory 
Of the ones that 
Came before me. 
The fact of the matter is
I've never been a slave
I can't speak on something 
I don't know about

So I refuse to take a slave 
Like message 
to any masses of people 
To tell them 
They shouldn't celebrate 
A day
That is a symbol of 
What my people 
Fought & died for 
In the United State
